The horsetail (Equisetum) is the only extant genus from the Horsetail division (Equisetophyta). The name Horsetail comes from the Slavic word "hvost", which means tail. This is also the origin of the scientific name of the genus — Equisetum. It is made up of the Latin words equus = horse and saeta = hair, mane.
Horsetail has a blood-sparing, anti-inflammatory, genitourinary, constipation and reminerelizing effect. Due to the content of silicic acid and its derivatives, Horsetail was used in the past as a means of fighting tuberculosis (helps calcination of tuberculosis outbreaks).
